Too much coconut oil can leave hair feeling heavy or greasy. Start with an ordinary shampoo routine and give the oil time to rinse out. You do not need to add more oil to solve the problem.
How to wash excess coconut oil out
- Wet your hair thoroughly. Use comfortably warm water and separate dense sections so the water reaches your scalp.
- Shampoo gently. Follow your shampoo's label. Massage it into the scalp with your fingertips and let the rinse run through the lengths; avoid rough scrubbing.
- Rinse well and reassess. If your hair still feels oily, follow the product's directions about a second wash. Avoid repeated washing until your scalp feels tight or irritated.
- Condition where needed. Fine or straight hair may need conditioner mainly on the ends. Dry or curly hair may benefit from it through the lengths. Rinse as directed.
- Handle wet hair gently. Blot with a towel and detangle carefully. Judge the result after drying, since wet hair can feel different.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing products for your hair type, concentrating shampoo on the scalp, and conditioning after washing. Read its healthy hair care guidance for more detail.
What about clarifying shampoo and kitchen remedies?
If you already use a clarifying shampoo, follow its label and consider your hair's needs, including any color treatment. A stronger product is not automatically the right first step. Baking soda, dish soap, vinegar mixtures and raw egg are not part of the routine described here; a shampoo made for hair gives you clearer directions for use.
Use less oil next time
Begin with a very small amount, spread it between your hands, and apply only where you want it. Fine hair may need less than thick or tightly curled hair. Keep track of the amount and how your hair feels after washing before increasing it. An oil's texture does not guarantee that it will wash out easily.
Whole coconut oil and fractionated coconut oil are different products, so read the bottle rather than assuming they behave the same. Bella Terra's Fractionated Coconut Oil page explains our product and lists currently offered sizes. If you are choosing an oil for a future routine, compare textures in our carrier oil guide.
When to stop
Stop any product that causes irritation. Persistent scalp discomfort or a change that concerns you is a reason to seek advice from a qualified professional rather than trying additional home mixtures.
