Plain-language basics

A carrier oil is the routine—not the homework.

Plant-based carrier oils are lipid-rich oils usually pressed or extracted from a seed, nut, fruit, or kernel. They can be used alone or as the base for a properly diluted essential-oil blend. Bella Terra also sells separately identified animal-derived oils, including Emu Oil.

01

It is not an essential oil.

Carrier oils are not concentrated aromatic extracts. They generally feel like familiar plant oils and can often be used on their own.

02

It does not need to feel greasy.

The finish depends on the oil and the amount. Jojoba can feel light and silky; castor feels much richer and more cushiony.

03

“Natural” is not a safety shortcut.

Patch test first, keep water out of the bottle, stop use if irritation occurs, and use product-specific directions.

04

The best choice is personal.

Placement, preferred feel, climate, other products, and the amount you apply all change the experience.

A four-question shortcut

Choose your first oil in under a minute.

You are looking for a comfortable starting point—not a forever commitment.

Where will it go?

Face, body, hair ends, scalp, beard, or massage? Start with one main routine.

How should it feel?

Light and quick, softly balanced, or rich with more cushion and glide?

How often will you use it?

Choose 2 or 4 oz to learn the oil. Larger sizes make more sense after you know it fits.

Your first three uses

Learn the oil before adding more.

The most common first-timer mistake is using too much. A smaller amount tells you more about the oil’s real finish.

Before use one

Patch test.

Apply a small amount to a limited area and wait before broader use. Do not use on broken or irritated skin.

Safety before routine
Use one

Try less than you think.

Warm one to three drops between clean fingertips. Apply to slightly damp skin or smooth the trace over hair ends.

Notice spread + finish
Uses two + three

Adjust one thing.

Change the amount, placement, or timing—not all three. That makes it easier to understand what works.

Build a repeatable ritual

Three approachable starting points

Different feels. No wrong doorway.

These versatile oils make it easier to compare light, balanced, and softly rich textures without overcomplicating your first order.

Before the first bottle

Good questions are part of a good routine.

These are the questions first-time customers ask most often.

Can I use a carrier oil by itself?
Many single-ingredient carrier oils can be used by themselves as part of a cosmetic face, body, hair, scalp, beard, or massage routine. Follow the individual product directions and patch test first.
Will an oil automatically clog pores or feel greasy?
No single label predicts everyone’s experience. Oil choice, amount, placement, other products, and personal preference all matter. Begin with a small amount and notice the finish before adding more.
Should I use oil before or after moisturizer?
A simple starting method is to press a few drops onto slightly damp skin or apply after a water-based moisturizer. Your other products may have their own directions, so introduce one change at a time.
What size should a beginner buy?
A 2 oz or 4 oz bottle is usually the easiest learning size. Choose a larger size after you know the oil, the amount you use, and how often you reach for it.

Your first oil should feel clear—not risky.
